My wife and I are 18yrs in the lifestyle (in one form or another) raising three kids throughout; we might not have all the answers, but we might have some kind of useful advice.

sure, I'll ask.
At what point did you (or have you) come out to your kids? How did it go? If you have not come out, do you plan to? |

This issue is what I have been looking to discuss. I am mom to an almost 2yr old. I would like to raise him to be accepting and openminded to all people whether their differences be related to race, sexuality, etc. I don't want to keep mine and my husband's choices for our lifestyle from him forever. I want to be able to be as open and honest with him as he would need me to be. I realize it is very early, but I want to be prepared for some of the inevitable questions before they arise. How have you addressed your lifestyle/sexuality with your children? I don't really know what else to ask at this point. Thank you for making yourselves available!

Hello,
My kids were young, 3 and 6 when I divorced, and started living life polyamorously. At some point a couple years after that, I told them that most people are with one person at a time, or married to one person, but I do it different, it is called polyamory, and I have a few people I love and am with. I also explained it to my nephew like that (sometime it seemed appropriate or he asked) and he just said, oh, ok. Because I have my kids only 1/2 of the week, and do not live with anyone, they only a couple times were around me and 2 people I was with at the time. They thought it was unusual, but sort of understood. Usually my adult time is the 1/2 of the week I do not have them. They now also know that I am with a number of people, some I have to travel to be with. They also know gay people, so know that some people do not follow the mainstream, and that is ok. I answer any questions as I am out to them, my family, and the world. I was also interviewed for the paper, and told them beforehand that was happening (now they were pre-teenish age), in case their friends saw the article. We live in a place which is fairly unconventional (south Florida) so most likely we would not have been banned from their friend's houses. xo Beki |
